Data products translate those findings into meaningful knowledge that inspires action by scientists, educators, decision makers, and the public. The ASDC supports over 60 projects and provides access to more than 1000 archived collections. These data sets were created from satellite measurements, field experiments, and modeled data products. The ASDC projects focus on the Earth science disciplines Radiation Budget, Clouds, Aerosols, and Tropospheric Composition. We cover big topics like mental health and your muscles, bones and joints.
People with SAD may be more likely to have blood relatives with SAD or another form of depression. You'll soon start receiving the latest Mayo Clinic health information you requested in your inbox. Don't brush off that yearly feeling as simply a case of the "winter blues" or a seasonal funk that you have to tough out on your own. Take steps to keep your mood and motivation steady throughout the year. If possible, take winter vacations in sunny, warm locations if you have winter SAD or to cooler locations if you have summer SAD. Follow your treatment plan and attend therapy appointments when scheduled.

The theory that the Sun is the center around which the planets orbit was first proposed by the ancient Greek Aristarchus of Samos in the third century BC, and later adopted by Seleucus of Seleucia . This view was developed in a more detailed mathematical model of a heliocentric system in the 16th century by Nicolaus Copernicus. The Solar System is surrounded by the Local Interstellar Cloud, although it is not clear if it is embedded in the Local Interstellar Cloud or if it lies just outside the cloud's edge. Multiple other interstellar clouds also exist in the region within 300 light-years of the Sun, known as the Local Bubble.

The useful range for color vision in humans, for example, is approximately 450–650 nm. Aside from effects that arise at sunset and sunrise, the spectral composition changes primarily in respect to how directly sunlight is able to illuminate. When illumination is indirect, Rayleigh scattering in the upper atmosphere will lead blue wavelengths to dominate. Water vapour in the lower atmosphere produces further scattering and ozone, dust and water particles will also absorb particular wavelengths.
Best Gardening Books – Grow More Food, Get More Creative
Figure out your gardening zone and estimated first and last frost dates. If possible, talk to successful gardeners in your area to find out which crops grow well and which don’t. In this post I’ll cover the basics of gardening, and provide links to more detailed information so you can garden with confidence and have fun doing it.

This report draws on primary data from health-energy assessments across 40 sample health facilities in Burkina Faso, as well as key stakeholder consultations and meetings with government and external health and energy experts. Our team is made up of doctors and oncology certified nurses with deep knowledge of cancer care as well as journalists, editors, and translators with extensive experience in medical writing. Some brands of eyeglasses and contact lenses now offer protection against UV rays as well. But don’t assume this is true for lenses you wear unless it’s clearly stated on the product label or you confirm this with your eye care professional. Of course, glasses come in many shapes and sizes, and smaller lenses will cover and protect smaller areas.

The visible surface of the Sun, the photosphere, is the layer below which the Sun becomes opaque to visible light. Photons produced in this layer escape the Sun through the transparent solar atmosphere above it and become solar radiation, sunlight. The change in opacity is due to the decreasing amount of H− ions, which absorb visible light easily. Conversely, the visible light we see is produced as electrons react with hydrogen atoms to produce H− ions. If you think you may be suffering from SAD, talk to your health care provider or a mental health specialist about your concerns. They may have you fill out specific questionnaires to determine if your symptoms meet the criteria for SAD.

Since 1978 a series of overlapping NASA and ESA satellite experiments have measured total solar irradiance – the amount of solar radiation received at the top of Earth's atmosphere – as 1.365 kilowatts per square meter (kW/m2). TSI observations continue with the ACRIMSAT/ACRIM3, SOHO/VIRGO and SORCE/TIM satellite experiments. Observations have revealed variation of TSI on many timescales, including the solar magnetic cycle and many shorter periodic cycles. TSI provides the energy that drives Earth's climate, so continuation of the TSI time-series database is critical to understanding the role of solar variability in climate change. Sunlight is a portion of the electromagnetic radiation given off by the Sun, in particular infrared, visible, and ultraviolet light.

In the early years of the modern scientific era, the source of the Sun's energy was a significant puzzle. Lord Kelvin suggested that the Sun is a gradually cooling liquid body that is radiating an internal store of heat. In 1890 Joseph Lockyer, who discovered helium in the solar spectrum, proposed a meteoritic hypothesis for the formation and evolution of the Sun. The Solar System is located in the Milky Way, a barred spiral galaxy with a diameter of about 100,000 light-years containing more than 100 billion stars. The Sun resides in one of the Milky Way's outer spiral arms, known as the Orion–Cygnus Arm or Local Spur.
Most autotrophs, such as plants, use the energy of sunlight, combined with carbon dioxide and water, to produce simple sugars—a process known as photosynthesis. These sugars are then used as building-blocks and in other synthetic pathways that allow the organism to grow. Thus, it would give perceptions and "feel" very much like Earth daylight.
The heavy elements could most plausibly have been produced by endothermic nuclear reactions during a supernova, or by transmutation through neutron absorption within a massive second-generation star. The term sol with a lower-case s is used by planetary astronomers for the duration of a solar day on another planet such as Mars. Cognitive behavioral therapy is a type of talk therapy aimed at helping people learn how to cope with difficult situations; CBT also has been adapted for people with SAD (CBT-SAD). It is typically conducted in two weekly group sessions for 6 weeks and focuses on replacing negative thoughts related to the winter season (e.g., about the darkness of winter) with more positive thoughts. CBT-SAD also uses a process called behavioral activation, which helps individuals identify and schedule pleasant, engaging indoor or outdoor activities to combat the loss of interest they typically experience in the winter. Both serotonin and melatonin help maintain the body’s daily rhythm that is tied to the seasonal night-day cycle.
Over watering is as bad as under watering, so always check the soil before turning on a tap or hitting the rain barrels. Foliar feeds like compost tea can be added to give plants extra nutrition and a dose of healthy microbes while watering. Young plants are easier to damage than older plants, so they may need protection or hardening off when they are planted outside.
